A major part of legal advocacy is your community. Without your community it will be harder to achieve the amazing legal goals you have in mind. As a pre-teen or teen, you may find it difficult to raise awareness in your community which is why we created a few tips for you! With these ideas you can gain amazing experiences through assisting your community while also gaining an amazing activity that will look good on college or even grad school applications.
Connect with your Senator
Write a letter to your senator. Find out when your senators or representatives are holding public meetings; attend them. Use your social media presence to share posts and interact with your local government officials to make sure your voice is heard. This action can help you connect with more like-minded individuals your age . You can also connect with your senator by programs such as USSYP (United States Senate Youth Program) and become a U.S. House of Representatives or Senate page
2. Volunteer at your local library
You can volunteer to read to senior citizens, children, and help out with local literacy programs. Whether it's shelving books or helping out with computer questions, you can make a difference. Through volunteering you can gain community service hours and connect with other youth volunteers! You could even ask your library if you can host fundraisers or create youth programs at the library.
3. Reach out to local non-profits
Another way to work with a non-profit without starting your own is reaching out to local ones. You could ask the non-profit directors if you could assist them with their social media pages, help them connect with other organizations, or help create and hold fundraisers. Many non-profits are looking for teens and high school students to help them connect with the youth in the community!
Community is a big part in using your voice and spreading knowledge. Your community can be what makes the organization or programs you want to start skyrocket. Using your community also helps you spread knowledge of amazing causes to others. Reaching out to your peers and adults in your community can make a big impact in your extracurriculars!
